The Art Of Pysanky (Ukranian Eggs)
Sunday March 24th 10am-12:30pm
Cost: 35.00 per person
Supplies Included!
Ages 12+

This workshop at Colorest is a unique opportunity to learn a skill that is traditionally passed down by the Matriarch of the family to their children in Ukraine. Pysanky, also known as Ukrainian eggs, is a folk tradition that is both art and prayer.  The method is similar to batik - patterns are drawn on the egg with hot beeswax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colors of dye, a multi-colored pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal the colors that were covered up at each stage. The finished product, with its intricate designs and symbols, does not suggest the meditative process involved. A great deal of patience and concentration is required to complete a single egg, but it is very rewarding to reveal your hard work when the wax is taken off. All skill levels and ages can create an original pysanka. You will leave with a beautiful egg at the end of the session.

This tutorial will cover the history and traditions surrounding Pysanky, how to make your own egg, and an independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of eggs, many hard-to-find traditional and non- traditional colored dyes, and tools. Please bring a container or old egg carton. ages 12+
The instructor, Jenny Santa Maria, has created many beautiful eggs with a more modern aesthetic.  Her approach to this medium is untraditional in that she explores and experiments with mathematical concepts in her work and enjoys the therapeutic and soulful process of creating intricate designs on eggs.
Jennifer is a high school art teacher in Tinton Falls, and exhibits her decorative eggs and embroidery in the tri-state area.  She has been teaching pysanky for several years in various settings, including the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors in New York State.

About Tom Lynch
Tom has been referred to as one of the nation's premier watercolorists. He has written 7 books and hosted several award winning PBS TV Art Series. He was recently listed as one of the nation's top 20 teachers by a leading Art magazine. He is represented by some of the nation's leading museums and art galleries. He has been the spokesperson for the entire National Art Materials Trade Association, and continues to be the international spokesperson for many leading art material manufacturers. Tom is currently featured on the new cable TV channel Visual Arts Network, and in 2007 he became the CMO and featured artist for Art Academy Live (the leading on-line education source).
With his uniquely styled landscape paintings, he strives for a level of excitement, movement and resonance that seems to push somewhere beyond what the environment naturally provides.
When considering subjects he tries to search for something striking; like the color of the sky, the direction of natural light, pattern of shadows, or the glint of sunlight on water. He then embellishes those striking features.
Lynch hopes that by accentuating those things that are sometimes easy to miss, he can provoke viewers to ... "Have something to think about, not just something to see". Each painting Tom creates can be seen as special. "I feel it's the job of the artist to bring to the viewer the best of what can be found in the landscape along with a little creativity or exaggeration ... normal and ordinary are not for me."
