We all loved the PBS show "The Joy of Painting" with artist Bob Ross and now you too can create some happy little trees!

Join us for a fun and relaxing painting experience that is perfect for the complete beginner and the experienced painter.

Mark Saenger will walk you through step by step using the Bob Ross method of creating a wet on wet oil painting. By the end of the day, you will leave with your masterpiece ready to frame.

Mark is a certified Bob Ross teacher, having spent time learning personally from and having a friendship with him back in the early 90's. Learn the special techniques as seen on TV and remember there are no mistakes - just happy accidents!

The Art of Pysanky with Jenny Santa Maria

 Come celebrate the spring at Colorest with this unique opportunity to learn an ancient art and folk tradition. Pysanky, also known as Ukrainian eggs, are created using a process similar to batik. Patterns are drawn on the egg with hot beeswax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colors of dye, a multi-colored pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal the colors that were covered up at each stage. A great deal of patience and concentration is required to complete a single egg, but it is very rewarding to reveal your hard work when the wax is taken off. All skill levels and ages can create an original pysanka.  

This workshop will cover the history and traditions surrounding pysanky, demonstration, and an independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of organic eggs, many traditional and non- traditional colored dyes, and all supplies. This meditative and communal experience is unlike any other art process and for many this workshop marks the beginning of a spring time family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come.

In-person attendance will be extremely limited.

From textiles to wrapping paper, many references have contributed to her body of work. She has been teaching pysanky for several years in various settings like libraries, artist retreats and museums but always appreciates intimate settings where families and friends can gather. Many years ago it all started with private lessons in her living room and she tries to bring that same special quality to each and every workshop. There is no greater joy than keeping this soulful process alive and bringing families together through the arts.

​Instructor Carla Valentino will introduce and then explore the nearly limitless possibilities and combinations that are available to the mixed media artist. Whether you are a beginner and have never painted or have had some experience in the past or simply want to upgrade your painting techniques this course will get you on the painting path. In depth information will be discussed on paints, painting mediums, brushes and surfaces. Learn to understand your paints and brushes and what they can do for you. Discover your own hand and style preference with tools you need to progress on your own level.

Similar techniques apply to both oils and acrylics. Acrylics now compete with oil paints in terms of the range of colors and transparent glazing colors. The class will teach a specific methods and easy to master techniques in either oils or acrylics or both.

I am on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts for over 35 years and have many awards for commercial and personal paintings. I am also teaching foundation painting at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Free prints for a 16 x 20 inch art panel will be provided to the class. These images are based on portraits, still life, botanical and landscapes as well as a variety of other subject. Students are also free to provide their own photographs for reference purposes.

In the Illustration and Comic Technique course we go over the processes of creating a singular dynamic image or visual storytelling through creating several pages to form a visual narrative. Students will learn such skills as drawing anatomy, perspective, determining light sources, inking, and color theory, putting all these skills together to create a singular image or visual narrative that can give the creator a new way to express themselves as an artist.

For all ages 10 & up.

Sean’s career has landed him working with cultural luminaries such as Harvey Pekar, Blondie, and Weird Al Yankovic. Some of the work from those previously mentioned has gone on to in some cases be a NY Times instant best seller (Face It by Debbie Harry) and others receiving an Eisner nomination (The Illustrated Al by Alfred Yankovic). His art has appeared in such press outlets as the New York Times, Juxtapoz Magazine, and MTV.com

Landscapes and More Painting Classes with Mark Saenger Spring 2026

Wednesday 6:30pm - 8:30pm March 18th - May 6th

PAINTING CLASSES in oil or acrylics focusing on landscape, still life and other subjects based off of each students interest.

These classes will be open to ALL Levels 

* Receive individual Guidance 

* Express your own unique style. 

 Understand the Principles & Fundamentals 

Class Subjects; 

 How to get that “Magical Look” & Feel into your work,  The Use of Photos, Composition, Value, Color, Edges, Atmosphere.                     

 Secrets, Tips and Tricks & More!       

Mark will use a combination of Lecture, Demos & One-on-One Personal Instruction. 

Students who participate in these series of classes will explore the subjects listed above in depth, while working on  personal paintings & Group projects .

8 week 2 hour course $256.00 plus materials

Materials not included, please inquire prior to class of material list needed. Colorest students receive a 20% discount on materials where applicable.
